Plump, planktonic forms with compact sturdy, cone-like bodies which taper anteriorly; the posterior is bluntly pointed. 2 ventral and 2 marginal rows of cirri which spiral around the body. The peristome is large and broad with the AZM extending at least half the body length. 2 undulating membranes situated on the right of the peristome. Macronucleus divided into two elongate or ovoid parts each with an adjacent micronucleus. Transverse cirri absent. Only a few species have been described. Revision of species by Stiller (1975). Jankowski (1979) places Tuffrau's H. faurei in a new genus Pelagotrichidium Jankowski, 1978.
