Class Oligohymenophora: Subclass Peritricha: Order Peritrichida: Suborder Sessilina (ref. ID; 2014)

Synonym Cothurniopsis Stokes, 1893 (ref. ID; 2014)

[ref. ID; 2014]
Body elongate, usually trumpet-shaped, enclosed within an erect pseudochitinous lorica mounted upon a short outer stalk. The anterior lateral borders of the lorica are pliable and used to close the anterior aperture of the lorica when the ciliate contracts. Usually found growing on the outside of crustacea including freshwater crayfish (Astacus). The genus is most easily confused with Cothurnia which does not have a valve to the lorica and with Pseudothuricola and Pyxicola which have different types of valves.
