Office for Atmospheric and Oceanic Monitoring, Center for
Global Environmental Research, National Institute for
Environmental Studies, Toshinobu MACHIDA
The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) will commemorate 20 years since the construction in Taketomi Town, on Hateruma Island in the Yaeyama Islands of Okinawa Prefecture, of the Global Environment Monitoring Station, Hateruma (“Hateruma Station”). To mark this occasion, NIES will hold a symposium on Ishigaki Island and introduce the outcomes of observations relating to the global environment obtained from the Yaeyama Region. In addition, the facilities of the Hateruma Station will be open for public viewing.
Event Overview
Since the establishment of Hateruma Station in Taketomi Town, Hateruma Island in the Yaeyama Island chain of Okinawa Prefecture in 1992, NIES have been carrying out long-term continuous monitoring of Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane and related substances. To mark this occasion, we will hold a symposium to commemorate the 20 years which have passed since the establishment of Hateruma Station and to introduce the latest observational results relating to changes in the global environment as obtained in the Yaeyama Region and especially at Hateruma Station. The facilities of Hateruma Station will also be open to the public, and in addition to the opportunity to be guided around these, there will be a mini-seminar and a poster exhibition. We are looking forward to welcoming many visitors to Hateruma Station.
