Side Event and Exhibition Booth at United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), COP17/CMP7

November 17 (Thursday), 2011
National Institute for Environmental Studies (029-850-EXT.)
Mikiko KAINUMA, Fellow, Center for Social and Environmental
Systems Studies (2422)
Hideaki NAKANE, Executive Research Coordinator (2225)

The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) will jointly host a side event with the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) with the title “Low Carbon Society (LCS) in Asia: from planning to implementation” at The 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 7th Session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the parties (CMP7) to the Kyoto Protocol (November 28 - December 9, Durban, South Africa.)

At this side event, the latest research outcomes relating to the requisite emissions reductions for all of Asia, including Japan, China and India and the means for their realization, towards the halving of global GHG emissions by 2050 will be reported. There will be parallel reports on initiatives towards scenario research and its social implementation for the developing region of Iskandar, Malaysia in addition to a discussion with the policy-implementing institutions.
At the exhibition booth at the COP17/CMP7 venue, the status and outcomes of the broad scope of NIES’ environmental research initiatives - with a focus on global warming - will be introduced. This will be done by means of exhibitions on climate change risk assessments using scenarios, climate projections and impact prediction models as well as GHG monitoring etc., towards the realization of Asian LCS.

1. Overview of Side Event “Low carbon society (LCS) in Asia: from planning to implementation”

Date: Friday, 02 Dec, 2011
Time: 16:45 - 18:15
Venue: Room 3, COP17/CMP7 Conference Venue, Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC), Durban, South Africa
Hosts: National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES, Japan)
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM, Malaysia)

Contents: We will report on the latest research outcomes relating to:
  (1) The requisite emissions reductions for all of Asia, including Japan, China and India, towards the halving of global GHG emissions by 2050
  (2) The means by which LCS scenarios and roadmaps for the developing region of Iskandar, Malaysia should be implemented
These reports will be based on the existent means of formulating scenarios and roadmaps towards the realization of Asian LCS developed using the Asia-Pacific Integrated Model (AIM).
In addition we will engage the administrative bodies responsible for implementation in a discussion to deepen the dialogue on research towards LCS and the role of policy.

2. Overview of NIES Exhibition Booth

Date: November 28 (Monday) – December 3 (Saturday), 2011
Venue: COP17/CMP7 Conference Venue, Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC), Durban, South Africa
Contents: We will present to the world the status of the broad scope of NIES’ environmental research initiatives and their outcomes, with a focus on global warming and climate change. In particular we intend to display climate change risk assessments using scenarios, climate projections and impact prediction models towards the realization of Asian LCS developed using the Asia-Pacific Integrated Model (AIM); as well as various GHG observational results - including the latest observational data from world first Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT) “IBUKI”.
