NIES CRMs

This photograph shows CRMs which is distributed from NIES.

The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) developed "Pepperbush" as Japan's first Certified Reference Material (CRM) in 1979. Since then, we have been developing environmental reference materials useful for environmental monitoring.

Environmental CRMs are utilized to evaluate new analytical methods and to control the accuracy of pretreatment and instrumental analyses. 

Based on the opinions of researchers and the needs of society, the NIES produces CRMs and Reference Materials (RMs).

ISO Guide 30: 2015
・RM: material, sufficiently homogeneous and stable with respect to one or more specified properties, which has been established to be fit for its intended use in a measurement process
・CRM: reference material (RM) characterized by a metrologically valid procedure for one or more specified properties, accompanied by an RM certificate that provides the value of the specified property, its associated uncertainty, and a statement of metrological traceability

  • NEW
    Notice of Expiration and Specification Change: "NIES CRM No.12 Marine Sediment"

    The current pouch-packed version of "NIES CRM No.12 Marine Sediment" will reach its expiration date in May 2026. In response to user requests for improved usability, we have decided to transition all remaining inventory to a bottled specification.
    We apologize for any inconvenience during this transition—including the re-bottling and re-certification process—and appreciate your understanding. Details regarding the new CRM will be announced on our website and in our newsletter as soon as they are finalized.
  • The expiry date of NIES CRM No.3 Chlorella has been extended to March 2036 based on the stability evaluation.

    The expiry date of NIES CRM No.32 Bluegill has been extended to March 2036 based on the stability evaluation. The isotopic composition of Hg in NIES CRM No.32 Bluegill has been determined and added as an appendix to the certificate.
  • Please be announced that our CRM's shipment will be closed from March 10th 2026 to March 31th 2026 for maintenance.
