1. Water

1.1. APW medium

Medium composition

0.5 mM NaCl, 0.2 mM NaHCO3, 0.05 mM KCl, 0.4 mM CaCl2.

Purpose for use

Artificial pond water.

1.2. ASPM medium (Guillard, 1983)

Medium composition

Purpose for use

Synthetic seawater.

1.3. Chalkley's medium

Medium composition

0.01% (w/v) sodium chloride, 0.0004% (w/v) potassium chloride, 0.0006% (w/v) calcium chloride.

Purpose for use

Isotonic inorganic salt solution.

1.4. EPA medium (EPA, 1985)

Medium composition

NaHCO3 96 mg, CaSO4/2H2O (or CaSO4) 60 mg, MgSO4 60 mg, KCl 4 mg in deionized water 1L. Deionized base water was obtained from a Barnstead NANOpure II system with one pretreatment, one high-capacity, and two ultrapure cartridges. pH 7.5.

Purpose for use

Synthetic freshwater.

2. Soil

2.1. ASTM artificial soil (ASTM, 1997)

Soil composition

10% sphagnum peat moss, 20% kaolin clay, 70% sand (grade 70. particle size 0.1-0.3 mm). The ASTM soil is of the same composition as the OECD soil (OECD 1984) and serves as a standard test medium. (ref. ID; 3301)
