[Reservoir]

[The resevoir of the River Danube at Altenworth, Lower Austria]

The River Danube in Austria is classified as a rhithral water body, the maximum temperature never exceeding 20 degrees C. In the reservoirs, the dams generally lead to a lowering of flow velocity, increased sedimentation of suspended matter, and accumulation of silty- to clay-size sediment near the power plant; at Altenworth, the annual sedimentation is 390 000 m3 year-1, which has resulted in the accumulation of sediment 6 m deep before the dam within 10 years.
