Nitroaromatic compounds and their numerous derivatives are of use as explosives and propellants both in the military and industory. A number of studies have shown that nitro compounds, their metabolites of environmental transformation and by-products of their synthesis or incomplete combustion are harmful for the biosphere due to their toxicity. For instance, toxic effects in humans after dermal, oral or respiratory exposure include gastrointestinal, neurological and reproductive disorders, cirrhosis of the liver, hepatitis, cataracts, respiratory and skin irritation, nephrotoxicity, and hematological defects. Fungicide.

Toxicity

2,4-Dinitrophenol uncouples oxidative phosphorylation without blocking oxygen consumption by dissipating the electrochemical gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane. In early studies on Tetrahymena, DNP was reported to affect dose-depended respiration, phosphate accumulation, endocytosis, fine structure after a 1-hr exposure, and final cell density a 96-hr exposure. Effects were enhanced when DNP was tested at acid pH pointing towards the undissociated DNP molecule being active state. (ref. ID; 7348)

Purpose for use

High melting explosive.

Toxicity

This explosive is toxic to some aquatic organisms, including fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) and the freshwater microcrustacean Daphnia magna, and some terrestrial organisms including mice and rats. But, HMX is not toxic to the bioluminescent bacteria Vibrio fisheri and is not cytotoxic or mutagenic to bacterial and mammalian cells in aqueous solutions of HMX. (ref. ID; 6115)
