Methods were developed to permit the identification of several filamentous microorganisms. Most of these methods could be conducted on microorganisms in mixed culture and therefore eliminated problems in modifications of the microorganisms with changes in environment and permitted the identification of microorganisms which could not be obtained in pure culture. The use of these methods to study the growth of filamentous microorganisms in activated sludge samples was described.
