Notes

The Rhizopoda are recognised as a separate phylum, and the positions of non-testate, non-spore-forming amoebae within this phylum are re-examined. Naked, lobose, non-spore-forming amoebae are classified in the classes Heterolobosea, Lobosea, and Caryoblastea. Within the subclass Gymnamoebia, four orders are recognised. A new order (Himatismenida) is proposed for the Cochliopodiidae, which are regarded as transitional forms between Gymnamoebia and Testacealobosia. Altogether 4 new orders, 2 new suborders, 5 new families, and 2 new genera are recognised. A completely natural system for the Rhizopoda, whether as one phylum or several phyla, is impossible at this time. No relationships can be perceived amongst the 8 classes. However, some indications of relationships amongst families of gymnamoebae, particularly those included in the order Euamoebida as well as in the class Heterolobosea, are perceptible.
