Notes

1. The cultivation of the monogonont rotifer, Lecane inermis, has been carried out monoxenically (i.e., in the presence of but one other organism-a species of bacterium) for over two and one-half years. Twenty-seven serial sets of cultures have been established to date. 2. The medium used has been 0.05-0.1% malted milk supplemented with a 1:1,000 dilution of a heated (lamb or horse) liver extract and inoculated with the bacterial species. 3. L. inermis differs from other bactriophagous rotifers so far reared monoxenically in not being culturable with Escherichia coli as food species; it does well with an as yet unidentified species of Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria.
