Notes

The results of the culture experiment on the relation between environmental factors and the growth of Lecane are as follows. 1. Light was not necessary for the growth of Lecane, but better results were obtained in light than in darkness in case of the culture with algae added. 2. Several cultures were maintained at different temperatures ranging from 15 degrees C to 40 degrees C. The relation between the temperature and the population of Lecane after six days was as follows. log N = 6.6006logT-5.9888 15< T <28 (N: Individual numbers of Lecane/ml, T: Temperature of culture medium) 3. The range of hydrogen ion concentration of medium in which the growth of Lecane could be observed was pH 3 to pH 10, and the optimum concentration was weakly acid (pH 5.0-5.5). 4. Condition of air was important for the culture of Lecane, and the growth of the latter was controlled by the former (Oxygen factor). 5. The growth of Lecane was under the influence of form and size of culture vessels.
