Notes

Monoxenial cultivation of rotifer Lecane tenuiseta in the presence of a species of bacterium has been carried out for two years. The results of the studies on the effects of various culture media upon the growth of Lecane are as follows. 1. For the culture of Lecane, microorganisms and powdered clover were suitable as a food, but an addition of an organic acid to these gave better results. 2. Extent of growth of Lecane has been tested with various organic nutritives, and the constant growth was obtained with the P.S.T. medium (peptone 50 mg, saccharose 200 mg and potasium sodium tartrate 50 mg per liter). As to the effect of the P.S.T. medium, it was observed that the amount of peptone and saccharose, both of which were indispensable to the culture, corresponded to the degree of growth of Lecane. While tartractic acid accelerted its growth rate. 3. The environment, the organic medium, became changed with the increase of bacteria, but this change was not so remarkable as the succeeding one brought about by the increase of Lecane.
