Notes
Continuous culture of Keratella cochlearis and Brachionus angularis were held in a two-stage chemostat. No steady state was achieved. While Keratella reached higher individual densities than Brachionus its filtration rate and its maximal birth rate, which in both species depended on food input, was much lower. Keratella better used the ingested energy for its reproduction. In contrast to the r-strategist Brachionus, Keratella proved to be a K-strategist. The relation of data from continuous cultures to field study data was discussed.
