Gastrulation in Enoplid nematodes was studied with reference to Enoplus brevis using intracellular labelling with Lucifer Yellow. At the 8-cell stage a single blastomere giving rise to the entire endoderm is found. Gastrulation in E. brevis and in nematodes of the Subclass Secernentea is characterized by considerable similarity. At the same time, E. brevis differs in the variability of embryo cell lineage and, in particular, in the indeterminate localization of the endoderm primordium at the 2-cell stage. The Enoplida differ from other closely related orders (Enoplia) in which at the 2-cell stage the endoderm primordium is localized exclusively in the anterior blastomere and from the other nematodes in which the primordium is located in the posterior blastomere. The taxonomic importance of nematode characters that characterize their embryonic development is discussed.
