Notes

A new species and genus of naked lobose amoebae (subclass Gynmamoebia), Paradermamoeba valamo gen. et sp. n., found in freshwater bottom sediments (Valamo Archipelago) is described. The cell surface structure is unique among representatives of the subclass, but it belongs to the family Thecamoebidae because of its locomotory morphology. The current diagnosis of the family, corrected and updated in 1987 by Page, is discussed. It is concluded that the diagnosis should not include such characters as nucleus and cell-surface structure.
