Notes

Results are provided from experiments on introducing ciliates from the Black Sea sublittoral into the microbenthos of the White Sea littoral. Great resistance is noted from the established and undisturbed community to the invasion by a new species. When the balance of species is disturbed and density of organisms is reduced in winter, the new species is able to invade and become established in the community. Analogous results were obtained when the community is artificially destabilized in summer. In both cases, the population of the invading species increased uniformly and not explosively.
