A study was made of the effect of pH on the acute toxicity of cadmium to groundwater organisms (Trichodrilus tenuis, Asellus cavaticus and Niphargus aquilex). The test conditions were static, the pH-values amounted to 5, 6, 7 and 8, the temperature was always 12 degrees C. The evaluation followed by the t-Test of the statistic program SPSS of the University of Kassel. The results showed, that N. aquilex was the most resistant species to cadmium, T. tenuis the most sensitive species. An influence of pH to cadmium-toxicity could be demonstrated: The toxicity was less at pH 5 and increased with increasing pH-value. This state is discussed with the pH-dependent formation of mucous-cadmium-complexes on the surface of the body-wall or gills respectively.
