Notes

In this paper we describe the thecal plates of five bilaterally flattened dinoflagellates, all of which have very reduced epithecae. As a result of the extra detail which can be seen with SEM it has been possible to sort out much of the confusion regarding the taxonomy and nomenclature of these organisms. There are many more species present in the sand than has previously been realised and it is necessary to describe three new species and two new genera. The paper concludes with a simple key to the organisms described: Sinophysis ebriolum, Thecadinium kofoidii, T. neopetasatum sp. nov., Planodinium striatum gen. et sp. nov., Sabulodinium undulatum gen. et sp. nov. and S. inclinatum comb. nov.
