Notes

The effects of low dose rate U.V. irradiation were studied in Tetrahymena pyriformis. The functional modifications brought about by the U.V. irradiation were evaluated by means of a DNA, RNA and protein synthesis cytophotometric study. The consequences of the irradiation were: - temporary blocking of the cell cycle at G1 due to a stoppage of replication; - a second blocking at G2 due to a permanent stop of the mitosis triggering processes for a certain number of cells; - hyperpolyploidy for other cells; - temporary reduction of RNA and protein synthesis. This investigation also presents nuclear alterations from the end of the irradiation period. Nucleolar fusion was demonstrated by cytochemical and autoradiographic methods.
