Notes

A localised dedifferentiation affects the conjugant's anterior infraciliature in Stylonychia mytilus when they mate. The result is a transitory dimorphism which precedes the three reorganizations through which both partners come back to the vegetative state. During the first one, while a new somatic infraciliature is restoring itself on both ventral and dorsal sides, only the anterior part of the adoral fringe renews itself - and no other buccal structure. The second reorganization completes the preceding adoral zone by adding a new membranellar zone and it gives rise to the missing paroral structures. The whole somatic infraciliature restores itself again. A third reorganization reorganizes the infraciliature of both sides and give rise to a new series of pre-buccal membranelles which implant themselves in place of the preceding ones. All these processes, different from those which have Euplotes, seem to have a direct relationship with the post-gamic evolution of the nuclear apparatus.
