Notes

Fine structural analysis of the encystment-excystment process in Diophrys scutum provides a striking contrast to previously examined hypotrich ciliates. Major differences are reported in the mode of encystment, the process of cyst formation, and the composition of the cyst wall. A classification of hypotrich cysts is erected based on whether a particular organism resorbs all its kinetosomes during encystment or maintains them intact within the cyst. The classification is further augmented by nuclear, cyst wall and cytoplasmic observations.
