Notes

Different types of polysaccharides are stored in the ten species of ciliates examined. In particular there are: glycogen, which appears as alpha or beta particles, and paraglycogen which appears in the form of ganules of variable electrondensity and size. Both glycogen and paraglycogen are stained selectively by TSC-silver proteinate or PTA. Enzymatic treatments showed that paraglycogen granules all react in the same way independently of their morphology, while the two types of glycogen behave differently. Then the distribution of these reserve substances was examined in relation with the habitat, the feeding and the systematics of ciliates.
