Notes

In the sibling species complex Euplotes vannus, a few clones appear to give strong sexual reactions when confronted with clones undoubtedly belonging either to species 1 or species 2. The present work is devoted to the analysis of the reactions obtained with one of these exceptional clones, Pou 12. When Pou 12 is confronted with a species 1 clone or with a species 2 clone, two kinds of pairs are obtained, homotypic and heterotypic. Some viable hybrids are produced, at very low frequency; they are invariably sterile. At the opposite Pou 12 is interfertile with another clone, Pou 1 collected from the same station. It is likely that these two clones belong to a third species of the E. vannus complex, though some lethality is observed among the F2 hybrids between them.
