Notes

Seasonal changes in protozoan populations inhabiting fine sediments were studied in contrasting stream types in southern England. Effects of fish farm effluents on the populations were considered. Results showed that the lower standing crop of ciliates occurred in a nutrient poor, soft water stream while highest values were recorded at a chalk stream site receiving fish farm effluent. By contrast, flagellates were relatively more important at the soft water site than at any of the chalk steam sites.
