Notes

Euglena gracilis (367) cultivated on sludge extracts had higher growth rates than those cultivated on a standard Euglena medium. Two per cent sludge extracts gave the best growth rates, followed by 1% and 3% sludge extracts and the Euglena medium. Activated sludge was better than digested sludge for the cultivation. Sludge extracts prepared by autoclaving gave better growth rates than those obtained by stirring (for 1 hr using a blender), possibly because of the release of nutrients from organic compounds at the higher temperature. The chlorophyll and protein contents of the algal cells cultivated on different media were also in line with the growth rates. Higher contents of manganese, zinc and iron were observed in E. gracilis cultivated on sludge extracts, especially at higher concentrations.
