Representative genera of several orders of euglenophytes are compared and evaluated with respect to flagellar systems and nutritional strategies. As nutritional modes change from phagotrophy to phototrophy, there are concomitant changes in flagellar numbers, motility patterns and substructures, especially in the paraxonemal rods. We suggest that these differences in flagella and nutrition are interrelated and can serve as major criteria in the assessment of evolutionary trends in the phylum.
