The "captor strands", organelle-like structures of the motile stages for capturing diatoms, are documented by photomicrographs. The small, early resting stages multiply by binary fission. One of both sisters transforms first into a motile stage. It leaves a "membrane" which seems to be connected with the corresponding structure of its divisional partner. One may suggest that the "membrane" prevents the resting stage from fusion with other resting stages. The later resting stages, which owe their larger size to the fusion of the preceding motile stages, carry out successive cytoplasmic divisions (plasmotomy). They can best be observed after intensive feeding with the cryptomonad Pyrenomonas.
