Notes

The morphogenesis of the hypotrichous ciliate Notohymena rubescens Blatterer & Foissner, 1988 was investigated. 14 stages of the cortical and nuclear fission are described and depicted. The morphogenesis starts with a proliferation of basal bodies close to the uppermost transverse cirrus forming the oral primordium. Three frontal-ventral-transverse anlagen of the opisthe separate from the oral primordium and 3 from the postoral ventral cirri. In the proter anlage 1 originates from the parental undulating membranes, anlage 2 from the buccal cirrus, the anlagen 3 and 4 originate from the right and left posterior frontal cirri, and the anlagen 5 and 6 evolve "de novo". The development of the dorsal kineties proceeds according to type 4 of Foissner & Adam (1983) and shows no special features. In the middle stages of morphogenesis the genus-specific hook at the anterior end of the paroral membrane is formed by addition of basal bodies. In this stage the paroral and endoral membrane are arranged side by side. They overcross in late stages and the characteristic arrangement is obtained just after cell fission, as well as it is known from the related species Cyrtohymena muscorum. In general, the cortical divisional morphogenesis of Notohymena rubescens is very similar to that known from other Oxytrichidae.
