Notes

Two strains originating from different habitats in Sevilla (Spain) were identified as Paramecium sexaurelia from the Paramecium aurelia species complex. It was the first finding of this species in Europe. Both Spanich strains can interbreed, showing a high percentage of surviving clones in F1 and F2 of their hybrids. However, only a low percentage of surviving clones was observed in F2 of hybrids of the Spanish strains with strain 159 from Puerto Rico, the standard of P. sexaurelia. European strains of P. sexaurelia and the American one are genetically differentiated.
