A study using six species of the free-living amoeba was carried out using multivariate analysis of ninety-seven morphological, physiological and ecological characters. The derived taxonomy indicates that 1. Amoeba discoides and Amoeba proteus are intraspecific instead of interspecific, 2. Chaos carolinensis and Chaos illinoisensis belong in the same genus, 3. the above two pairs are more closely related to each other than they are to Amoeba dubia and 4. all four species are distantly related to Pelomyxa palustris. Although the numerical taxonomix scheme is essentially identical to the natural scheme by Bovee and Jahn (1973) it differs from that postulated by Kudo (1966). This study is also agreement with the limited serological studies that have so far been carried out.
