Notes

Surface structures of stalk and lorica of several symphoriontic suctorians and peritrichs have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Lorica structures are compared with stalk structures of species without lorica. The different types of fixation to the substratum are described. Concerning the fixation, several specialisations could be observed for the first time. Discophrya notonectae possesses a sucker-shaped fixation-organelle, in Orbopercularia enochri the basal disc is reduced. The end of the lorica-stalk forms a cramp-like fixation-organelle. For the peritrichous ciliates of the genus Orbopercularia a basal pellicular bulge is described which is present when stalk or lorica are built up.
