Notes

The authors studied the conditions which favor hatching of resting eggs in a laboratory population of B. plicatilis, and also the ones that maintain them in a dormant state. Although embryonic mortality is sometimes high, optimum hatching rates are observed only in the presence of light, at a temperature range of 14 to 20 degrees C and in a culture medium of average salinity. Storing resting eggs in darkness, at low temperatures (<10 degrees C) or at high salinity (~/_33 0/00) keeps them dormant.
