Notes

The leukocyte of Lumbricus (Annelid, Oligochaeta) is the only cell responsible for specific protection mechanisms (cellular mechanisms as well as humoral ones). Moreover it is capable of phagocytosis. In vitro cultures of isolated leukocytes in a simple medium show that Mg2+ acts strongly in the expression of either agglutination or phagocytosis and release of hydrogen peroxide. These functions are reversible.
