The strain of ameba, culture incubation temperature, and phase of ameba growth affected number of amebostomes present on amebae of Naegleria fowleri. Serial passage of N. fowleri through mice decreased the average number of amebostomes. Amebostomes were shown to be functional by their ability to engulf yeast cells.
