Notes

The annual production of the large naked amoebae population (>200 µm in length) of a Sphagnum bog was calculated as 49.7 kJ m-2 yr-1 (to a depth of 10 cm). Incorporating this value with the results of a previous laboratory study on the biological efficiencies of Amoeba proteus, the energy flow through the large naked amoebae population in the field was estimated. Total consumption was 361.0 kJ m-2 yr-1 of which 127.1 kJ was assimilated and 233.9 kJ was egested. Of the assimilated energy, 77.4 kJ was respired.
