Notes

Small soil amoebae, part of which are pathogenic, constitute one of the least under-stood groups of Protozoa. Most characteristic soil species and their distribution in different kinds of soil have been described in detail. Toxic agents (e.g. phosphorus-containing insecticids) greatly affect cells of amoebae causing profound cytological changes. The production of polysaccharids, amino acid and vitamins by soil Hartmannella and limax amoebae in combined cultures with azotobacter is considered.
