Notes

A study was made of the soil-inhabiting testate amoebae of five experimental plots in the Solling area (2 beech stands, 2 spruse stands, and a meadow). Classification of the testacean associations by an average linkage cluster analysis showed higher similarity between corresponding soil layers of different plots than between different layers of the same stand. In the forest soils, maximum species numbers, diversity and abundance are found in the F-layer, while under meadow maximum density is reached in the upper 2 cm of the soil. The estimated densities per m2 were 56.9x10E6 and 113.4x10E6 cells in the two beech plots, 84.2x10E6 and 105.7x10E6 cells in the spruce plots, and 238.9x10E6 cells in the meadow soil. The corresponding biomasses (wet weight) were 1.5 and 2.3 g/m2 (beech), 3.5 and 4.2 g/m2 (spruce) and 3.6 g/m2 (meadow).
