Notes

Many metazoa are present in wastewater treatment processes and their presence indicates a measure of their importance in the treating of wastewater. The rotifers are among the most numerous of the metazoa, and they apparently do work similar to that of the ciliates. They are able to obtain food when even the stalked ciliates have difficulty and are, thus, members of a very stable biological system. In activated sludge, where bacteria are present as well-formed flocs and where rotifers are present in abundance, the rotifers, like the stalked ciliates, indicate a well-operating process. Rotifers of the class Bdelloidae are the most common.
