Notes

The aim of the present study was to analyse the effects of heavy metals (Cd, Zn) on the life-span and the reproductive activity of a bdelloid species Philodina roseola (Rotifera). The data on survival and fecundity under stressed conditions indicate that no phase in the life cycle has more sensitivity to metals. Egg viability was found at every concentration, and the pre-reproductive phase covered the same period of time in tested animals as in controls. In general, the reproductive rate was inhibited by toxicants although four zinc concentrations among the ones tested had no effect either on longevity or on fecundity of the species.
