Notes

Abundance, vertial distribution, and species richness of soil ciliates and testacea of a ski trail and a neighbouring alpine pasture were investigated. The abundance of active ciliates was very low in the virgin soils; but culture methods produced high individual densities in some samples. The abundace of the ciliates and testacea was strongly reduced in the area of vehement skiing. This is probably due to the changed soil conditions and the disturbed water balance. Both sites showed a remarkable decrease of the population density in 5...10 cm depth. There were comparatively small differences in species richness between the alpine pasture and the ski trail. This indicates that skiing does not cause severe changes in species composition. These preliminary results indicate that the structure of the protozoan community will soon return to a normal state, if the ski trail is recultivated with plants.
