Notes

In the reach examined by the author the effect of industrial sewages is felt very much. Indicator ciliates denoting pure water were found only in quite small quantity. Dominating are the beta-alphameso- and at times, the alpha-polysaprobic organisms both as to the number of species and of individuals. The spring maximum in the number of individuals is followed by a summer minimum; however, again a higher number of species and individuals is found in autumn, especially in the purer reaches of the Danube, e.g. at God (1669 r.km.). Still, this tendency may change upon external effects, as experienced by the author at Nyergesujfalu in spring and at Gonyu in autumn. In the course of the earlier examinations of the Szentendre and Vac branches of the Danube -conducted with the same method- the author found that there still the beta-mesosaprobic character was predominant, yet numerous factors point to the possibility that with an increase in number of the alpha-mesosaprobic organisms this condition may change. In the Hungarian upper Danube reach this change in the condition of the biological water quality has already ensued in the months the author conducted her examinations.
