Notes

1. The division of the associations of rhizopods from Sphagnum swamps into three types by Harnisch (1929) has been in general confirmed by later investigations (Hoogenraad, 1935). 2. The absence or presence of many species of Nebela indicates differences between the environmental conditions in stagnant water or in constantly refreshed water. 3. Some species of the group Arcella arenaria, Arcella catinus, Arcella artocrea and Arcella microstoma prefer the Sphagnum environment but are not strictly bound to one of Harnisch's types. 4. The same can be said of Arcella mitrata and Arcella crenulata, which mostly occur together in constantly wet Sphagnum in rather oligotrophic, acid water (pH 4-6). 5. Arcella crenulata should be considered as an independent species, resembling Arcella mitrata in many details.
