For the river Saale, a C-budget of periphyton was elaborated. The investigations were carried out near the stations Kaulsdorf-Eichicht (beta-meso- ... oligosaprobic) and Rothenstein (alpha-mesosaprobic). The net production amounted to 50% of gross production. The loss of substance of the dead algae in correlation to CO2-development and O2-consumption were measured. Nearly 70% of dead algal material was mineralized as CO2, 30% remained as particulate matter and 1.4% was transformed into dissolved organic carbon. The O2-balance of algae (O2-production of green algae, O2-consumption by decomposition) shows positive values. In Cladophora-bunchs, which are dirtied, the assimilation is stopped.
