Notes

The aim of this paper is to describe and recommend a set of improved procedures and new tools for qualitative and quantitative investigations of Aufwuchs communities, i.e. those entire associations of vegetal and animal microorganisms that live together, at least during the major part of their existence, in durable contact with the surface of solid substances submersed in freshwaters, many of them being durably fixed to their carrier in their adult state, others remaining always vagile but normally in continuous touch or very near to the supporting surface.
