Mortality of freshwater rotifers passing through the non-chlorinated, open cooling-system of a fossil-fuelled power-station was investigated. Samples from the intake and discharge were held for 4 hours prior to preservation, using vital staining for dead-live determination. Damage was primarily due to mechanical stress rather than heat.
