Notes

Rotifers are obligatory phagotrophytes, i.e. they feed on particulate matter, even if they can assimilate dissolved organic substances. Digestion is generally extracelluar, but intracellular digestion has been found in a few species of the genus Itura and Ascomorpha (Monogononta, Pseudotrocha; Remane, 1929; de Beauchamp, 1932) and in the family Habrotrochidae (Digononta, Bdelloidea; see Burger, 1948; Schulte, 1954).
