A method for sampling benthos communities is proposed in order to test the hypothesis of homogeneity underlying the classical sampling methods. Multivariate factorial analysis gives insight into the specific sample profiles and documents some unexpected factors of variation. A study of the Oligochaete community of the lake of Creteil illustrates the method.
