Notes

The purpose of the paper is to find out the species and types of filamentous microorganisms in bulking sludge and the relation between these filamentous microorganisms and the operating factors of the activated sludge plants in which those microorganisms are found. The investigation has been done in thirteen activated sludge plants in Toyama prefecture in August 1983. Filamentous microorganisms were identified mainly according to the table of ATV (1977) with reference to Eikelboom (1975) and Strom & Jenkins (1981). Ten types of filamentous microorganisms were found. Type 1701 was found in eight plants, Type 0961 was in seven plants, and Type 021N, Sphaerotilus natans and Haliscomenobacter hydrossis were in five plants. Some problems about the table of ATV were discussed and some improvements of the table were suggested based on this study. In these microorganisms, Type 1701 and Type 1863 were shown to be distributed in the highest range of COD sludge loading and also BOD sludge loading, Type 0961 followed these, and Type 021N, H. hydrossis and Sphaerotilus natans were in the low loadings. All of these microorganisms were found even in low DO concentration.
