Pareudesmoscolex differs from Desmoscolex only by the structure and ornamentation of the body cuticle. It has a homonomous cuticular annulation provided with 'warts' or 'papillae'. In some specimens of P. pratensis and P. laciniosus, Lorenzen, (1969) observed anteriorly and posteriorly complete main rings. These specimens represent transition forms between Pareudesmoscolex and Protricomoides-Desmoscolex. The warts or papillae consist of minute spines surrounded by fine to coarse concretion material, more or less irregularly arranged on the body annules. Pareudesmoscolex resembles, in general appearance, the juvenile specimens of terrestrial and freshwater Desmoscolex-species. The latter possess low annules bearing minute (Desmoscolex koloensis) to prominent (Desmoscolex vinealis) cuticular tubercles (warts) with at the top a pore or a small tube. The warts may be surrounded or not by a thin layer of fine particles, giving the appearance of scales. Due to this great similarity Decraemer consider Pareudesmoscolex as a group with juvenile characters. Juvenile of Pareudesmoscolex apparently show no differences with juveniles of marine Desmoscolex-species. As there exist intermediate forms between Pareudesmoscolex and Desmoscolex representing several degrees of development of the ornamentation of the body cuticule, and because of the juvenile characters in adult and the presence of similar juveniles in both genera, Decraemer consider Pareudesmoscolex as a subgenus of Desmoscolex.
